On Saturday morning, before basketball practice and another morning nap, I managed to carve out creative time for myself in the midst of chaos. With two boys in the house, one 5 year-old who’s constantly in motion and one 4 month-old who’s glued to my hip, finding time to set up elaborate photo shoots is pretty scarce. What if I assign myself a quick photo prompt?
It was that gray in between hour usually reserved for naps and house sprints then snack time followed by I’m bored and I need something to do so I’m going to bounce off the walls because it’s winter and I want to go outside and play time. Dishes piled up in the sink. A land mine of Legos, blankets, and books on the living room floor. Makeshift desk spread across the dining room table. I thought about cleaning up, and then weighed the options. Do something I love or hate? I ignored the mess, leaped over the wood block construction site, and picked up my smartphone.
The assignment: shoot a photo a minute for 10 minutes then edit the images into a collage. The story began in the bedroom and ended in the kitchen. It got me out of my head and into the moment. This is how life should be.
